They used that same missile to get to the moon, but with some modifications. The reason why putting a man on th e moon was important, was to show which country had superior technology and weapons. Kennedy gave inspiration and hope to the American people in his speech to Congress on May 25, 1961 in which he stated, I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth. This showed the Soviet Union that the United States was more superior and had better technology. Apollo 11 also had an impact on the people not just in the United States, but around the world that the sky is not the limit.
